Ових дана светом конзервационизма одјекнула је вест о смрти даме Дафне Шелдрик, једне од најзначајнијих личности заштите дивљих врста животиња, а нарочито слонова.
Дафне је рођена 1934. године у Кенији, што јој је омогућило да од најранијег детињства буде окружена животињама, како домаћим тако и дивљим, и да тако развије љубав према њима која је трајала до самог краја њеног узбудљивог живота.
Школовање је започела у основној школи у граду Накуру да би средњу школу завршила у главном граду Кеније, Најробију. Године 1950. у истом граду уписала је факултет и добила могућност стипендирања на универзитету Кембриџ. Међутим, ову прилику није искористила јер се радије одлучила за брак. Срећом, овакав избор није је спречио да у свом животу чини велика дела.
Заједно са својим супругом Дејвидом, током 25 година заједничког живота, одгајила је и успешно рехабилитовала (вратила у дивљину) многе дивље врсте животиња, између осталог: слонове, црне носороге, биволе, зебре, еланд антилопе, куду антилопе, импале, брадавичасте свиње, мунгосе и разне врсте птица.
Дане заједничког живота Дафне и Дејвид провели су у националном парку Тсаво, где је Дафне радила као заменик управника парка.
Након Дејвидове смрти (1977. године), Дафне у његову част оснива Дејвид Шелдрик Фондацију намењену заштити дивљих врста Кеније. Фондација и дан данас прикупља и издваја велика средства у сврху за коју је Дафне и наменила.
У оквиру фондације покренут је пројекат под називом Пројекат Сирочад, који је брзо постао срж свих активности заштите дивљих животиња којима се фондација бави. Циљ пројекта јесте одгајање младунаца дивљих животиња, а посебно слонова, и након њиховог стасавања, ослобађање у дивљину. Пројектом је до сада успешно одгајено више од 150 младих слонова.
Дафне се сматра првом особом која је усавршила формулу за млеко које је неопходно приликом одгајања младунаца слонова и носорога, пре њиховог пуштања у дивљину.
Промоцију дивљих врста и њихове заштите вршила је кроз четири написане књиге, аутобиографију и многобројне новинске чланке као и бројна телевизијска гостовања и предавања.
Као захвалност за све што је учинила за дивљи свет, Универзитет у Глазгову, јуна 2000. године, доделио јој је почасни докторат у области ветеринарске медицине. Дафне је такође поседовала и титулу витешког реда британске империје (M.B.E.) коју јој је енглеска краљица доделила 1989. године.
Дама Дафне Марџори Шелдрик преминула је у својој 84. години, 13. априла 2018. године, оставивши иза себе бројна достигнућа, несагледива дела за добробит биодиверзитета Кеније, али и целе планете.
