У последње време можемо чути да је сваки дан светски дан нечега. Зашто је то тако? Зато што свакога дана можемо да славимо нешто што нам је драго и да се потрудимо да то и заштитимо. Тако је данас „само још један“ светски дан када славимо постојање морских корњача. Баш 16. јун одабран је у част Dr. Archie Carr који је рођен на данашњи дан 1909. године. Dr. Carr је био херпетолог и предавао је зоологију на Универзитету у Флориди. Такође је познат као Turtle man по својој посвећености очувању морских корњача. Он је први указао на опадање њихове бројности и опасности које им прете и отпочео различите пројекте за њихово очување.
На почетку његове каријере огроман број корњача је убијан због меса и calipee која представља желатинозну масу испод тврдог површинског оклопа корњача и користи се за прављење супе од корњача.
1959. Dr. Carr је успоставио прву организацију за заштиту морских корњача, Sea Turtle Conservancy, која и данас наставља са радом. Захваљујући његовом инсистрирању у Костарики је 1975. отворен Национални парк Тортугуеро. Данас је популација зелених морских корњача у Тортугуеру друга највећа на свету.

У свету постоји само седам врста:
- (Natator depressus) Равнолеђа желва
- (Chelonia mydas) Зелена желва тј. Зелена морска корњача
- (Eretmochelys imbricata) Каретна желва
- (Lepidochelys kempii) Кемпијева желва
- (Caretta caretta) Главата желва
- (Lepidochelys olivacea) Пацифичка маслинаста желва, најмања
- (Dermochelys coriacea) Џиновска кожаста корњача
Равнолеђа желва природно настањује Индијски океан и јужни и западни Пацифик, а кемпијева желва обале Мексика и САД (Мексички залив). Осталих пет врста је широко распрострањено тако да су присутне углавном у свим морима осим у хладним поларним водама. У Јадрану се могу уочити зелена и главата желва, причему је главата многобројнија. А џиновска кожаста је уочена свега тридесетак пута у току прошлог века.
Све врсте морских корњача се налазе на IUCN листи. Само равнолеђа желва је под знаком питања услед недостатка података. Главата желва, пацифичка маслинаста и кожаста корњача су осетљиви таксони, а зелена желва је угрожена врста. Каретна и кемпијева желва су критично угрожене врсте! Тренутно постоји само 8000 каретних желви.
Живот морске корњаче почиње на песковитој плажи у тропима или супртропима. Свачији сан, зар не? Женка корњача се враћа на исту плажу на којој се сама излегла да би полегла јаја! И даље није познато како успевају у томе будући да током живота прелазе више хиљада километара. Тако је праћена једна кожаста корњача која је за 650 дана прешла преко 20 хиљада километара. Чисто ради поређења, обим Земље на екватору је око 40 хиљада километара. Претпоставља се да могу да прате Земљино магнетно поље и да тако проналазе свој пут до родне плаже да би полегле јаја. Младе корњаче се излежу након 6 недеља до два месеца у зависности од врсте. Тада се младунац пробија кроз свакакве неприлике како би дошао до воде, јер га овде чекају бројни предатори. Пси, лисице, ласице, ракуни, птице, крабе, крокодили и људи значајно смањују број јаја, а неки од њих се хране и младим морским корњачама. Такође, месождерне рибе се хране младим корњачама које уђу у воду. Ајкуле се хране и одраслим корњачама. Из тог разлога само 1 у 1000 младих корњача ће преживети и одрасти.
А сада следи период „изгубљене године“ када су младе корњаче ушле у воду и нико не зна шта се са њима даље дешава. Отприлике деценију младе корњаче проводе у отвореном мору и ова фаза се веома тешко прати. Након овог периода корњаче се враћају у обалске воде где наставаљају да сазревају. У зависности од врсте, потребно је 10 до чак 50 година да би корњача достигла полну зрелост. Сада ће само женке излазити на обалу да положе јаја, а мужјаци остају у отвореном мору. Женке полежу јаја на сваких 2-4 године више пута у сезони. Непознато је колико тачно година морске корњаче могу да преживе у дивљини. Научници сматрају да би то могло бити и до 100 година за неке врсте. Мада им је у данашње време животни век знатно скраћен услед људског утицаја.
Свака врста се разликује према исхрани: зелена једе морску траву, кожаста медузе, главата и кемпијева желва једу крабе и сличне оклопљене животиње, а каретна сунђере и друге бескичмењаке. Разликују се и по величини. Кемпијева је дугачка до 70 cm и тешка око 40 kg и представља једну од најмањих, а џиновска кожаста достиже дужину од 180 cm и тежину од пола тоне!
И за крај, зашто су морске корњаче важне? То је оно што се увек питамо, зар не? Као и сва друга жива бића, њихов главни утицај јесте у ланцу исхране. Ланац исхране је увек компликован и заправо није ланац него мрежа, тако да свака карика има подједнаку могућност да преживи, поједе или буде поједена. Ако нека карика нестане, то ће оптеретити оне око ње. Морске корњаче смањују број медуза које се хране рибама и број сунђера који су у компетицији са коралима за место. Сунђери на тај начин ограничавају настанак коралних гребена, а корњаче уклањањем сунђера помажу настанак гребена.
