Органска пољопривредна производња представља синтезу различитих метода узгоја као што су плодореди, коришћење зеленишног ђубрења, компоста, биолошка контрола штеточина итд. Све оне имају за циљ стварање што здравијег и богатијег приноса. Једну од ових метода чине и такозване поликултуре, односно здружени усеви.
Поликултуре представљају практично гајење два или више усева истовремено на једном месту. Како између више различитих биљака које се налазе на истом месту може доћи до два типа односа, компетиције и кооперације, приликом планирања усева увек треба имати на уму биљке које се међусобно допуњују.
Користи здруживања кооперативних усева су вишеструке. На тај начин оптимално користимо простор на којем гајимо биљке, поправљамо физичко-хемијске и биолошке особине земљишта, повећавамо агро-биодиверзитет, штитимо земљиште од утицаја ерозије, одржавамо влажност и одстрањујемо потребу за коришћењем пестицида.
Једна од најпознатијих комбинација, коју су користили још староседеоци северне Америке јесте комбинација кукуруза (Zea mays) и бундеве (Cucurbita pepo). Најчешће се користе усеви од два реда кукуруза и два реда бундеве. У овом типу поликултуре, бундеве штите кукуруз тако што великом лисном површином прекривају земљу и тиме спречавају ницање корова, али и претерано испаравање воде из земљишта. Кукуруз заузврат омогућава засену и обезбеђује оптималне климатске услове за развој бундеве.
Кукуруз такође може да се гаји и у комбинацији са обичним пасуљем (Phaseolus vulgaris). Пасуљ, као легуминозна биљка, у овом здруженом усеву обезбеђује фиксацију азота, чиме се смањује потреба за ђубрењем. Оптималан распоред за ову поликултурну комбинацију је један ред кукуруза и два реда пасуља.
На уводној слици приказан је здружени усев црног лука (Allium cepa) и шаргарепе (Daucus carota). На засебним усевима црног лука, често долази до појаве лукове муве (Hylemya antiqua), док се на засебним усевима шаргарепе појављује шаргарепин минер (Napomyza carotae). Ови инсекти могу да нанесу велике штете усевима, али уколико се посеју у наизменичним редовима, лук и шаргарепа ће се комбинацијом мириса и коренских излучевина међусобно штитити од ових штеточина.
