Дан сијамских мачака обележава се од 2014. године када је новинарка и списатељица Џејс Шумејкер Галовеј одлучила да након писања о различитим празницима и сама креира неколико њих. С обзиром на то да је љубитељ мачака, овај дан је посвећен сијамским мачкама са циљем да подигне свест о милионима напуштених мачака у азилима и да подстакне људе да усвајају, а не купују животиње. Сијамске мачке су једна од најстаријих раса мачака на свету. Потичу из Југоисточне Азије, тачније са Тајланда (тадашњег Сијама), где су биле поштоване због своје елеганције и лепоте, али и других интересантних веровања.
Сматра се да је ово прва раса мачака која је доместификована. Пре много векова, сијамске мачке биле су љубимци искључиво будистичких монаха и владарских породица на Сијаму, а владари су веровали да након њихове смрти, дух улази у мачку и остаје на „овом свету“ до њене смрти. Колико су сијамске мачке биле обожаване на Тајланду говори и то да постоје списи, односно књиге о мачкама, где су описане неке од раса мачака уз мноштво цртежа, односно слика. Постоји 15 различитих списа и ради се на истраживању периода када су написани, а досадашња истраживања говоре да је то било у 18. веку.
Док је са једне стране, ова раса била јако поштована у Азији, када су је први пут угледали, Европљани нису били одушевљени њеном лепотом и грациозношћу. У другој половини 19. века, 1871. године, сијамска мачка је изложена у Лондону у Кристалној палати, на првој већој светској изложби мачака. Тада су је посетиоци описивали, између осталог, као ноћну мору. Ипак, ова лоша репутација није дуго опстала, па је сијамска мачка убрзо постала популарни љубимац широм света. Први амерички председник који је уживао у друштву ове расе био је Радерфорд Хејз. Његова мачка Сиам је прва сијамска мачка која је стигла у САД као поклон америчког конзула из Бангкока. Касније, још неколико сијамских мачака нашло је своје место уз председнике САД-а, у просторијама Беле куће.
