Данас је међународни дан заштите озонског омотача! Захваљујући Монтреалском споразуму који је склопљен 16. септембра 1987. године, озонски омотач има свој дан. У свету се дан заштите озонског омотача обележава од 1995. године.
Озонски омотач се налази у стратосфери и штити нас од штетног Сунчевог зрачења. Кључан за одржавање живота на нашој планети. Управо је његово стварање пре више стотина милиона година било предуслов еволуције.
Научници су још 1970. године открили да је слој озонског омотача све „тањи“ у области изнад јужног пола. Ова промена у озонском омотачу означена је као „озонска рупа“ и закључено је да на њено повећање утиче присуство неких штетних гасова и супстанци у атмосфери, као што су фреони, халони и хлорофлуороугљеници (CFC).
Да би се спречило уништавање озонског омотача потписани су бројни међународни споразуми (први је био Монтреалски) чији је циљ био да контролишу производњу и коришћење штетних гасова. Ових штетних гасова некад је било у расхладним уређајима, спреј боцама, апаратима за гашење пожара итд. Без обзира што нови производи и уређаји дуго не користе ове гасове, њих још увек има у атмосфери и још увек се могу наћи у производима и уређајима старијих генерација, углавном у неразвијеним земљама. Стручњаци процењују да ће бити потребно неколико деценија да се њихова концентрација у атмосфери врати на ниво од пре 1980, што је био циљ поменутог споразума, усвојеног 1987. године.
