Брашнари (Tenebrio) су род тврдокрилаца распрострањен у подручјима са топлом и умереном климом широм света. У природи настањују високе траве, трула стабла или процепе у кори дрвећа. Због свог присуства у складиштима за храну, припадници овог рода се сматрају шеточинама.
Род Tenebrio садржи две врсте: Tenebrio molitor и Tenebrio obscurus.
Велики брашнар (Tenebrio molitor) се одликује издуженим, спљоштеним телом, чија боја варира од тамносмеђе до црне. Само на основу физичког изгледа тешко је разликовати мужјаке од женки. Адулти се развијају у пролеће, а након парења женка полаже јаја (до 500) на местима која обилују храном којом ће се ларве по излегању хранити.
За брашнара је карактеристичан потпуни (холометаболни) тип развића, односно ова врста пролази кроз 4 стадијума развића: јаје, ларва, лутка и адултна јединка. То значи да ови инсекти у току свог животног циклуса пролазе кроз метаморфозу.
Ларве брашнара се одликују златножутом бојом, имају 12 телесних сегмената. Стадијум ларве траје између 10 и 30 дана током којих она пролази кроз неколико фаза пресвлачења (5–10) пре него што пређе у стадијум лутке. Брзина развића зависи од исхране и спољашњих фактора као што су температурa, влажност ваздуха. Из лутке се након 10 до 20 дана излеже адултна јединка која живи од 30 до 90 дана.
Ларве брашнара имају неколико корисних улога у екосистему. Прва је та да они у ланцу исхране заузимају место разлагача, чиме омогућују нормално кружење материје кроз систем.
Њихова друга улога је недавно откривена и везана је за загађење које ми, људи, уносимо у природу. Научници су открили да ларве брашнара имају способност разградње стиропора.
Пре него што се позабавимо тиме како ове ларве могу разградити стиропор, хајде да видимо шта је то стиропор.

Доказани су бројни симптоми алергија и иритација које изложеност стиропору може изазвати код људи.
За разградњу једне посуде за храну од стиропора потребно је између 80 и 400 година.
Стиропор представља велики проблем због компликоване и скупе процедуре његовог уклањања и разградње. Када је реч о стиропору, методе попут примене високих температура уз употребу различитих хемијских раставрача и других супстанци су показале позитивне резултате разградње, али су и трошкови њихове примене велики. Управо због тога научници широм света раде на проналаску ефикаснијих метода, а последњих година све више се ради на примени биолошких метода.
Управо ту, наша ларва брашнара ступа на позорницу. Откривено је да ове ларве могу користити стиропор за исхрану и на тај начин га уклонити из животне средине. Наравно, овај полимер није баш најздравија намирница – група ларви којој је стиропор био једини извор хране је имала мању телесну масу, животни циклус се одвијао нешто спорије, али стиропор ипак није испољио токсичан и леталан ефекат на њих.
Оно што ове ларве чини посебним и способним за разграђивање стиропора јесу заједнице микроогранизама у њиховом дигестивном тракту. Експериментима је доказано да су оне ларве које су имале нарушене културе микроорганизама имале и смањену способност искоришћавања стиропора. Најзначајније врсте које помажу ларвама брашнара у разградњи стирппора су Enterobacter hormaechei, Enterococcus avium, Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella oxytoca, Pseudomonas aeruginosa и Lactococcus lactis.
Ларве врсте Tenebrio obscurus такође могу вршити разградњу стиропора захваљујући присуству истих микоорганизама у дигестивном тракту.
Најновија истраживања показују да се ове ларве, односно микроорганизми у њиховим дигестивним системима, могу користити за разградњу и других пластичних маса, попут PVC-а.
