Више од 12 хиљада људи у Србији је слепо или пати од неке врсте оштећења вида. Правилно обучени пси водичи могли би да им помогну да се осете сигурнијим и независнијим приликом савладавања свакодневних препрека. За сада, нажалост, ово није пракса у нашој земљи, и то пре свега зато што је обука паса водича скуп и дуготрајан процес.

Око пола века касније, 1934. године, у Британији је основано Удружење паса водича за слепе (енг. Guide Dogs for the Blind Association – GDBA). Током Другог светског рата, ови паси имали су широку употребу, посебно за ветеране који су изгубили вид у рату. Међутим, тек 2010. године, Удружење је успело да допринесе успостављању законских правила за особе са инвалидитетом којима су потребни пси водичи.
У Србији је Закон о кретању уз помоћ пса водича ступио на снагу 2015. године. Овим законом прописано је да се особама са инвалидитетом омогућава кретање уз помоћ паса водича у јавном превозу, објектима и површинама у јавној употреби, као и у радном простору. Међутим, код нас још увек не постоји центар за дресуру паса водича, па једино могу да се набаве из иностранства. Без обзира на високу цену једног таквог пса (око 15 хиљада евра), не треба да се заборави да су пси водичи нашим слепим суграђанима од неизмерне помоћи. Управо због недостатка такве установе у нашој држави, дресура паса водича и бесплатна додела слепима и слабовидима још није регулисана законом. Први пас водич у Србији купљен је захваљујући донацији грађана и зове се Астор.
