Да ли сте се некада запитали зашто је патак лепших боја од патке и зашто изгледају као две потпуно различите врсте?
Код великог броја врста може се уочити иста појава изразите полне селекције, мања или већа морфолошка разлика између мушких и женских јединки унутар исте врсте. Ова појава се назива полни диморфизам и јавља се код биљака и животиња. Последица је адаптације на различите начине живота и улоге мужјака и женке. Код птица, женка је одговорна за полагање јаја и бригу о младунцима. Због тога је она обојена тако да би се стопила са околином и остала неприметна, па на тај начин и заштитила гнездо. Мужјак има задатак да пронађе женку и заштити је од опасности, а у томе му помаже упадљива обојеност, снага и већи кљун.
Поред патке, птице код којих се уочава драстичан полни диморфизам су углавном птице тропских предела, али и неке нама познатије врсте, као што су фазан и паун. Паун се сврстава у једну од најлепших птица на свету, првенствено због карактеристичних шара на репу који шири приликом удварања или да би преплашио предатора. Такав паун је мушког рода, док је женка неприметна, без упадљивих шара и она свој реп шири искључиво када је у великој опасности.
Код неких животиња појављују се изразите разлике у величинама јединки. Пример где је мужјак дупло већи од женке је Штерелов морски лав (Eumetopis jubatus) из породице ушатих фока. Обрнуто се јавља код бројних бескичмењака и неких кичмењака, код којих женка премашује величину мужјака.
Један од најзанимљивијих примера, по мом мишљењу, је врста Bonellia viridis. Онаспада у раздео Echiurida, „морске глисте”, и специфична је по изузетном полном диморфизму. Мужјаци ове врсте су јако ситни (величине тела од 1 до 3 mm) и ретко су предмет проучавања. Они живе као паразити, на или унутар тела женки, које их користе само за оплодњу. Женке су крупније (величине тела од 10 до 15 cm) и слободноживећи су организми.
Још један од мојих омиљених примера је фамилија инсеката Lucanidae (нама познатија као јеленци). Мужјаци се одликују крупним предњим екстремитетима у облику клешта, по којима су лако препознатљиви. Клешта су добро развијена и служе им у борби против ривала као и држање женке за време парења. Женке за разлику од мужјака имају знатно мање предње екстремитете који су веома оштри па је њихов угриз за разлику од мужјака снажан и болан.
Људи се одликују секундарним полним карактеристикама које се развијају касније у животу (у периоду пубертета). Код мушкараца су то брада, дубок глас, Адамова јабучица, висина, а код жена увећане дојке и шири кукови. Код других животиња то су рогови, канџе, повећана маса…
Као и код животиња полни диморфизам се јавља и код биљака. Биљке могу бити једнодоме или дводоме. Једнодоме биљке имају мушке и женске цветове (нпр. кукуруз, бреза, орах, храст) док дводоме биљке имају једнополне цветове, што значи да се на једној биљци налазе мушки цветови, а на другој биљци женски (нпр. конопља, спанаћ, коприва, гинко).
Код дводомих биљака можемо видети разлике које нас могу и довести у питање да ли се ради о истој или различитој врсти. Један од примера полног диморфизма је веома популарна биљка Ginkgo biloba, у народу позната као Гинко или мандаринско дрво код којег се разликују мушке и женске јединке.
Мушки цветови су на кратким изданцима и имају облик ресе са пуно прашника. На мушким биљкама се на врховима кратких изданака образују висећи класићи (цвасти), а женски цвет има дугу дршку на чијем се крају налазе два семена заметка. Код женске биљке зрело семе је слично коштуници, дугачко око 3 cm. У пазуху листова на кратким изданцима женских јединки образују се семени замеци. Семе је обавијено меснатим омотачем врло непријатног мириса. Интересантно је да се за дрвореде и паркове користе мушке биљке, баш из овог разлога. Спољашњи слој семењаче је заправо меснат и непријатног мириса када је зрео, а унутрашњи слој је тврд.
Да бисте описали нову врсту морате бити сигурни да ли се ради о врсти која је већ описана, али је другог пола, па због тога изгледа као засебна врста. Полни диморфизам је један од карактеристика коју морамо узети у обзир када описујемо врсте.
Некада су разлике узроковане полним диморфизмом толико велике, да помислите да су у питању скроз различите врсте. Ипак, свака од тих разлика постоји са добрим разлогом, а зарад потпуног склада у природи.
Полни диморфизам нам индиректно указује и на повезаност и међусобну зависност мужјака и женке, те на њихову потребу за продужавањем врсте, али и бригу о својим потомцима.
