По чему је тачно Welwitchia mirabilis посебна?
Велвичија (Welwitchia mirabilis) је једини представник фамилије Welwitschiaceae и насељава сушне обале пустиња северне Намибије и јужне Анголе. Животни услови у овим пределима врло су окрутни, те је ова биљка морала развити истанчане механизме за преживљавање. Јасно је да пустиње нису погодне за живот биљака — пустиње су суве, преко дана вреле, а ноћу често хладне, а и само земљиште је врло сиромашно хранљивим материјама. Ретко која биљка би могла пронаћи дом међу пешчаним динама и неуморним сунчевим зрацима.
Ипак, Welwitschia је пронашла начин да у овим условима не само преживљава, већ и да успешно расте и активно се развија. Неке јединке ове врсте могу преживети чак 1500 до 3000 година! Сви недостаци пустиње као дома овој биљци не представљају проблем: има изузетну толеранцију на високе температуре, као и на релативно нагле промене температуре током дана и ноћи. Пронашла је начин да опстане упркос мањку нутријената, и што је најважније, добро се носи са недостатком воде.
Велвичија иманајчешће два зрела, јако дуга листа који непрестано расту током читавог живота. Спор, контролисан раст организма је једно од важнијих „поглавља“ у геному ове биљке. Да се ћелије ове биљке исувише брзо умножавају, ту би могли настати силни проблеми – као што нам је познато и код људи, брзо умножавање ћелија врло често доводи до абнормалности. Велвичија своју унутрашњу средину регулише тако да јој спор развој омогућава бољи темељ за дужи живот. Листови се ка крајевима под утицајем сунца суше и цепају, али се губитак те дужине успешно надомести младим деловима листа који почињу раст од самог центра биљног стабла. Научници који су имали прилику додирнути њене листове рекли су да подсећају на картон по својој чврстоћи.
Како велвичија опстаје са тако мало воде?
Иако није сукулентна биљка, користи сличан механизам чувања воде. Када наступи период дуже суше, велвичија је у стању да складишти воду у свом корену, који је често врло масиван и може порасти чак до 20 метара!
Осим тога, јединке које су нешто ближе обали у стању су да одређену количину воде приме из ваздуха, због нешто веће влажности ваздуха тог региона. Ту воду примају кроз листове, који на себи имају мале отворе стоме.
Биљка отвара и затвара стоме по потреби и на тај начин може надокнадити мањак воде у кореновим залихама.
Осим тога, у самом геному има врло јединствене гене који јој омогућавају да „одговорно“ користи енергију којом располаже, тј. да нутријенте троши постепено и контролисано. Њен геном је кратак, стога такође захтева мање енергије за „читање и преписивање“, али и умножавање.
